The Best Time to Trim Oak Trees
To prevent oak wilt, a fungus that kills oaks, you must only trim from July 4 to February 1. Oak wilt is prevalent in Central Texas and everyone who has a Live Oak on their property can be vigilant about the care and trimming of these beautiful trees to ensure their health and prevent the spread of oak wilt.
Often it is unavoidable because of storms and the oak trees must be trimmed to remedy damage. In this instance, treat the cuts with wound paint to prevent oak wilt from attacking your tree.
You should consult with a Texas Oak Wilt Certified arborist, ISA Certified Arborist, or an oak wilt specialist from a city, county or state government agency such as the Texas A&M Forest Service or Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. Advice from your local extension agent is free!
